Early in 1999 I had a dream. I was in a board room in the bank where I was running a meeting. There was no one else in the meeting room at the time. I was there on my own. However, there were other bodies in a sideboard in the same board room, bodies which were hidden away. These were dead bodies or selves. The dream was disturbing. I had not realised that I contained so many dead bodies. The dead bodies were not putrefying. They were just dormant, neglected, ignored, hidden in the cupboard (the dream’s witty pun on ‘closet’). Since I had some time early in January 1999, I decided to write letters to these dead bodies. The dream cupboard contained five dead and neglected bodies and there was one body, more alive than the others. I set out to write a letter to each of these inner figures and relate to each of them in turn. Each letter was written at one sitting, usually preceded by a long walk. I wrote one letter each day for six days. The letters were written originally in longhand and then I typed them up. They were shared at the time with very few people.
